The Redbird's story.

Blake sat down were he normaly sat. He started eatting his bread in silence.

Tyler was also eatting. His dinner better then the redbirds.

Cora sat down in her seat next to Blake. She didnt' like how they didn't have much to eat, but she knew her father was out risking his life every day for them. She ate slowly.

Elliot ran down to the well and filled her bucket with water. It was always hard for her to carry it back to her house. She lifted it and carried it a few steps before setting it down for a minute. She always spilled some on her way back, giving her more trips to come back.

Sally sat down and started eating as well.

Layla came to the table and sat down and ate her bread.

Blake red eyes were starting to clear up. When Mama wasn't looking he ripped a slice of bread in to three even strips, giveig one to each of his sisters.

Cora didn't look up as Blake gave her a piece of his bread. She was starting to feel bad about their argument earlier, but didnt' show it.

Elliot finally made it back with the bucket of water and walked inside, pouring it into the large wooden tub. She ran back outside and towards the well again. When she got there she filled it up again and started back to her house. After a few steps she set down the bucket and wiped the sweat off her brow with the back of her hand, breathing hard.

Sally smiled at Blake, but shook her head and gave the piece he gave her back to him.

Layla looked at blake when he gave her a piece of his bread.

Blake frowned.

Mama looked up then. "Sally you eat that." She thought that sally was giveing blake food off her own plate.

Cora glanced up but said nothing, continuing to eat in silence. She didn't give Blake back the bread he had given her.

Elliot made it back to her house and poured the bucket in the tub, before going back to the well.

'2 more trips,' she thought, panting already. She hated wash nights.

Sally put the piece of bread back on her plate. She wasn't going to tell her mom that blake had given it to her, because she didn't want to get himi n trouble. "Yes mama", she said and ate the other pieces of bread.

Mama smiled. "Good."

Blake was the first one doone considering he had given some of his food away.

'Why did he give me his bread?' Cora thought, taking another bite. 'He hates me.' She glanced at Blake quickly.

Elliot made it to the well again and sat for a moment to catch her breath, sitting with her back against the well, the bucket on the grass next to her.

Sally hid the piece of bread that Blake had given her, when mama wasn't looking and finished the other pieces of bread.

Tyler walked to the well to get drinking water. "Are you ok?" He asked Elliot.

Blake waited boredly for the rest to get done

Layla finished shortly after Sally did.

Sally played with her skirt out of boredom.

Cora finished eating as well and looked over at the others.

Elliot jumped, almost falling over when Tyler spoke. She hadn't been paying attention. When she saw it was him she nodded, her happier attitude back now that she wasn't watching Blake and Cora fight.

"Yeah, I guess," She said, standing up again. "I'm getting bathwater, mama says I have to wash tonight," she said. In saying she filled it up again and struggled to lift it. "I need 2 more buckets," she said.

Tyler tool the bucket from her hands "i'll help." He said He filled his own bucket. "Now you havboth buckets." It was easier for him 'cuase he was three years older.

Mama nodded them free to go.

Elliot looked up at Tyler, her eyes sparkling.

"Oh, thank you, Tyler!" She exclaimed, smiling at him.

Cora nodded at her mother and pushed her chair back, standing up. She would stay behind and help her clean up.

Blake stood up and looked out of the window at the setting sun.

tyler smiled and started walkig towards Rlliots home.

Layla smiled and got up from the table and put her plate in the sink and left the room.

Sally got up and gathered her plate and put it in the sink as well.

Elliot skipped down the path to her house next to Tyler. As they passed the Redbird's house she saw Blake in the window. She waved at him, smiling.

Cora watched her sister's leave and then turned to her mother.

"Can I help you with the dishes, mama?" She asked politely.

Blake waved back.

"go get ready for bed blake. yes, cora go get some water to help." mama said.

"Yes Momi." Blake said walking up the shairs.

Tyler laguh slightly.

Elliot giggled when Blake waved back then hurried to catch up to Tyler. She walked next to him, humming a soft tune.

Cora nodded and grabbed the bucket and walked outside. Since Tyler and Elliot had already passed her house she didn't see them as she walked towards the well.

Sally followed him up stairs. "Blake", she said still following him.

Blake stoped and truned around. "I know how to get ready for bed myself." He truned back around and started toclib up the shairs again.

Tyler walked up to Elliot's house and waited for to open the door.

Sally eventually caught up to him. "i know you can but I didn't want to takea piece of your food", she said quietly so their mother couldn't hear. She took out the piece he had given to her.
